Too British for some?, Too Somali for others?

WHERE DO

WE BELONG?

Every organisation begins with a problem. Ours began with a question.
For many British Somali women, that question has quietly shaped our lives.
Many of our parents fled civil war and came to the UK in search of safety and opportunity. Being unable to return “home” like many other immigrant communities Somali families lost something that cannot easily be replaced: everyday connection to our homeland, language, traditions and the natural support systems that surround East African living.

WHO WE ARE

We create spaces where British Somali women feel seen, heard and valued — celebrating culture, building confidence and shaping the future, together.

Many of us were born in Britain. Others arrived as young children. Britain is the only home we have ever truly known.

We were raised in British schools, neighbourhoods and workplaces, while carrying the responsibility of preserving a culture that many of us have inherited rather than experienced for ourselves.

Need & Impact

One of the youngest and fastest-growing communities in the UK.

Some women grew up surrounded by thriving Somali communities in the UK. Others did not.

OUR WORK

One sisterhood, two ways

Many have spent their lives navigating two cultures without ever feeling they completely belonged in either.

Hablo Roots

Honouring our roots

Group sessions reconnecting with Somali culture, deepening our sense of belonging and celebrating the traditions that shape who we are.

OUR VISION

Visible, celebrated and represented in every space.

Within our own communities, some women are told they are "too British", "too Western", "not Somali enough", "too outspoken", "too independent" or simply " too different."

GET INVOLVED

Rise with us.

Outside our community, and especially with the recent rise of the far right continue to experience racism, discrimination and the message that they do not fully belong in Britain either.

Volunteer

Lend your time, skills or lived experience to support women across the community.

Two worlds. One sisterhood.

Not every British Somali woman shares these experiences. But many do.
And for too many women, those experiences become isolation.
